AI visibility is becoming another marketing metric companies are expected to track.

Does ChatGPT recommend your brand? Does Perplexity cite your website? Which competitors appear in Google AI answers? Those are useful questions. They have also created a software category where spending $200, $400 or more every month can happen quickly.

Most startups do not need to begin there. A small company can learn a lot from a focused program costing less than $100/month, and in some cases less than $40. The key is knowing which data actually matters.

We build Prerender Buddy. This is a buying-framework guide, not a claim that one product wins every job. Product-by-product plan details live in AI visibility tools under $100. Pricing and plan details were checked on September 11, 2026 and can change.

A $29 product is not automatically better value than a $95 product, and 125 prompts are not automatically more useful than 15.

A simple budget framework

Under $40/month

Use this when you are learning. Track a focused set of prompts, establish a baseline and identify obvious gaps. OtterlyAI and Prerender Buddy both fit here, with different strengths: Otterly for daily dedicated tracking, PB for weekly visibility plus website and rendering work.

Around $95–$100/month

Move here when AI-search data has become part of the marketing workflow. Peec and Promptwatch provide higher-volume daily monitoring. Profound provides an entry point into its AEO ecosystem, currently ChatGPT-only on Starter.

$200+/month

This becomes easier to justify once several people use the data, reporting is regular, prompt coverage is broad and the organization actively executes against the findings. Scrunch Core at $250/month and higher tiers from other vendors fit this stage.

What should a startup actually track?

It is easy to create hundreds of prompts. That does not mean all of them matter.

Begin with questions close to real buying intent. If the company sells project management software, useful examples include "best project management software for small agencies," "alternatives to [major competitor]," and "how to manage client projects without spreadsheets."

Fifteen good prompts can be useful. Fifty good prompts can be better. Five hundred vague prompts can create an impressive dashboard while changing nothing. See how to choose AI visibility prompts.

Track outcomes, not just mentions

A brand appearing in an AI answer is not always meaningful. Separate:

  • Mentioned — the brand appears somewhere in the response.
  • Recommended — the AI presents the brand as a possible solution.
  • Cited — the website or another related source is used as evidence.
  • Missed — relevant competitors appear while the brand does not.

Those outcomes lead to different actions. See mentions, citations and recommendations.

Don't ignore what crawlers can read

AI visibility is often discussed entirely as a content problem. Sometimes it is a delivery problem.

React, Vue and other client-side sites can send a minimal HTML document before JavaScript builds the visible page. Search and AI crawlers do not all execute JavaScript in the same way.

Before rewriting dozens of articles, check what crawlers receive: main content, title and description, internal links, robots rules, errors or redirects, and whether the rendered version differs from the initial HTML.

Peec and Scrunch also analyze bot traffic, which is useful for understanding visits. The additional question PB focuses on is whether the delivered page itself needs rendering or technical remediation. See crawler access vs AI visibility.

Weekly versus daily AI tracking

Daily collection gives more observations and can make trend changes visible faster. Peec, Promptwatch, Otterly and Profound emphasize daily monitoring on comparable plans.

Prerender Buddy currently tracks included AI prompts weekly.

For a large brand with campaigns changing constantly, daily data may be valuable. For a small B2B product whose website changes once or twice per week, weekly tracking may provide enough signal. Pay for the frequency that changes your decisions.

Which affordable tool should you choose?

Choose OtterlyAI if you want the cheapest straightforward daily visibility tracker.

Choose Prerender Buddy if you want AI visibility plus website health, crawler evidence and managed prerendering, and can work with weekly prompt collection.

Choose Peec AI if you want a dedicated AI-search analytics platform with 50 daily prompts. See Peec AI alternatives.

Choose Promptwatch if you want similar tracking plus agent workflows, MCP and API access. See Promptwatch alternatives.

Choose Profound if you want to enter its broader AEO ecosystem and ChatGPT is the main engine you need initially. See Profound alternatives.

Choose Scrunch when AI visibility is mature enough to justify a broader $250/month platform. See Scrunch alternatives.

Full plan-by-plan limits for the under-$100 options are in AI visibility tools under $100.

Start with the problem, not the platform

Start with the commercial questions customers actually ask. Check whether the website is accessible. Track where the brand, competitors and sources appear. Fix a small number of important gaps. Measure what changes. Then expand the tooling when the next level of data is actually useful.

That is usually a better use of a startup budget than beginning with the largest dashboard available.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest AI visibility tool for a startup?

Among the products compared here, OtterlyAI starts at $29/month and Prerender Buddy starts at $39/month.

Can I track ChatGPT mentions for free?

Some products offer trials or limited free scans. Prerender Buddy's Free plan covers crawler and website diagnostics for one site; it does not include ongoing prompt tracking. Eligible paid workspaces also get a 7-day trial with 3 tracked prompts. Ongoing monitoring starts on Starter, Growth or Pro.

How many AI prompts should a startup track?

There is no fixed number. A focused set of 10–20 high-intent questions is often enough to establish an initial baseline. Expand when additional prompts represent genuinely different customer intents, markets or product categories.

Is daily tracking necessary?

Not always. Daily monitoring is useful when visibility changes frequently or the data is used operationally. Weekly tracking can be sufficient for smaller companies that make content and website changes less frequently.

Is AI visibility worth paying for before SEO?

They should not be treated as substitutes. AI visibility overlaps with SEO, technical accessibility, content and authority. For most startups, strong website fundamentals remain important regardless of how much AI monitoring they purchase.
