Semrush and Ahrefs are no longer only traditional SEO platforms.
Both now offer substantial AI visibility products for tracking how brands appear across ChatGPT, Google AI experiences, Perplexity, Gemini and other answer engines.
That creates a buying question: if you already use a major SEO suite, do you still need a specialist AI visibility tool?
Sometimes the answer is no. If the team already lives in Semrush or Ahrefs and wants AI visibility added to an established SEO workflow, keeping everything in the same platform can be sensible.
Specialist products can still make more sense when AI visibility is the main job, you need several AI platforms at a lower entry price, you want citation or competitor workflows designed around AI answers, you manage several websites, crawler-readability or JavaScript rendering is part of the problem, or you do not already pay for a large SEO suite.
This compares the economics, not a claim that a small specialist replaces a full SEO platform.

What Semrush offers for AI visibility
Semrush currently sells an AI Visibility Toolkit at $99/month per domain when billed annually.
The Base package includes AI visibility reports, 25 custom prompts with daily AI rankings, one domain for Brand Performance, mentions across ChatGPT, Google AI, Gemini and Perplexity, competitor analysis, prompt research, an AI-readiness site audit, and daily, weekly and monthly data updates.
The main advantage is the rest of Semrush: keyword research, search visibility, site audits, content and reporting. If a company already depends on that stack, adding AI visibility there can reduce tool fragmentation.
Where Semrush is strong
Semrush is useful when AI search is one part of a broader marketing program. Connecting AI visibility with established SEO data, site auditing, competitor research and reporting is hard for a smaller specialist to replicate across the full marketing stack.
Where a specialist can make more sense
The $99 toolkit is priced per domain and includes 25 custom prompts. A small company with several websites may care more about multi-site coverage or a lower entry price than about having AI data inside a traditional SEO suite. See AI visibility tools for agencies and multiple websites.
What Ahrefs offers for AI visibility
Ahrefs splits AI visibility into an index product and custom-prompt tracking.
Paid Ahrefs plans from Lite onward include a monthly custom-prompt check allowance. Standalone custom-prompt packages currently include Basic at $50/month for 2,500 checks, Growth at $100/month for 7,000, and Scale at $250/month for 25,000. A check is consumed when one prompt is tracked on one platform in one location. Frequency can be daily, weekly or monthly, so the same check budget covers more prompts if you collect less often.
Brand Radar is the research index: currently $199/month per platform index, or $699/month for all platforms (including 2,500 custom-prompt checks). Ahrefs describes a search-backed prompt set of 405+ million prompts across major AI platforms, modeled from real keyword demand rather than a short list you typed in.
Where Ahrefs is strong
Brand Radar can answer questions that go beyond "how did my 20 prompts perform today?" It helps analyze broader brand visibility across a large prompt universe, alongside Ahrefs' SEO and web datasets. For established SEO teams, that can be worth more than a narrow tracker.
Where a specialist can make more sense
A startup may not need a 405-million-prompt research index. It may only need to know whether it appears for 15 buyer questions, which competitors appear instead, what sources are cited, whether relevant crawlers can read the pages, and what to fix next. For that job, a smaller product can be more economical and easier to operate.
Specialist AI visibility tools are not all the same
Peec AI
Peec brand Starter currently costs $95/month for 50 prompts, three selected models, daily tracking and one project. Its strength is dedicated AI-search analytics: visibility, position, sentiment, citations, competitors and agent analytics. See Peec AI alternatives.
Promptwatch
Promptwatch Essential currently starts at $95/month for 50 prompts, four tracked models, daily tracking, Agent Credits and API/MCP access. It combines monitoring with action-oriented agent workflows. See Promptwatch alternatives.
OtterlyAI
Otterly Lite currently starts at $29/month for 15 prompts and daily monitoring across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot. Extra engines are paid add-ons. It is one of the simplest low-cost ways to begin dedicated tracking. See PB vs Otterly.
Prerender Buddy
Starter costs $39/month and includes three websites, 15 prompts weekly across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude, five competitors per site, 10 monitored pages per site, website health monitoring, crawler activity, managed prerendering, 25,000 fresh renders and 10 article drafts per month.
Growth costs $89/month for five websites and 40 prompts weekly across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Gemini.
Pro costs $139/month for ten websites and 75 prompts weekly across six platforms, including Grok and Meta AI / Muse, plus Developer API, workspace MCP and 12-month visibility history.
PB therefore sits closer to an operational website tool than a pure AI analytics product. Standard prompt tracking is weekly. See AI Visibility, Health & Monitoring and weekly or daily tracking.
Semrush vs Prerender Buddy
These products overlap on AI visibility and solve different surrounding problems.
Choose Semrush when you already use it heavily and want AI visibility connected with traditional SEO research, site auditing, keyword workflows, reporting and competitor research. The $99 toolkit is especially logical when the domain already sits at the center of a Semrush workflow.
Choose Prerender Buddy when you want AI visibility connected with crawler request evidence, raw-versus-rendered HTML, website monitoring, managed prerendering, multiple websites on lower paid plans, and content planning. For a JavaScript-heavy website, PB can help investigate whether crawlers receive different content from the page humans see. See Evidence and crawler support.
Semrush provides AI-readiness site auditing. PB's original product layer is managed crawler rendering and request-level delivery evidence. They are not substitutes.
Ahrefs vs Prerender Buddy
Ahrefs Brand Radar is built on scale. Its value comes from combining AI visibility with Ahrefs' web and search datasets.
PB is built around a smaller evidence loop: website → crawler → rendered content → recorded AI answer → citation/competitor → action.
If you need broad market research across huge prompt datasets, Ahrefs is substantially stronger. If you manage a handful of websites and want both AI visibility and whether crawlers can consume those sites, PB may fit the workflow better.
Suite economics versus specialist economics
A suite can be cheaper when you already pay for it
If the company already has Ahrefs Standard or a substantial Semrush subscription, adding AI tracking there may be more efficient than onboarding another vendor, duplicating competitor data, building another reporting workflow and training the team on another interface. The headline specialist price does not capture those operational costs.
A specialist can be cheaper when AI visibility is all you need
If you are not already paying for a large SEO suite, buying one primarily for AI tracking can be unnecessary. A $29, $39 or $95 specialist product may give you the monitoring you need without the rest of the suite. See AI visibility tools under $100.
What should small teams compare?
Do not compare only the number of prompts.
- Websites or projects. A per-domain price behaves differently from a plan that includes three, five or ten websites.
- Tracking frequency. Daily tracking produces more observations. Weekly tracking may be enough for a smaller site that changes less often.
- AI platforms. Check which models are included, not only how many are advertised.
- Citation evidence. Can you inspect cited URLs and recorded answers?
- Competitor analysis. Can you compare which brands appear for the same questions?
- Technical website evidence. Does the product show crawler traffic, response status or rendering problems?
- Traditional SEO depth. If backlinks, keyword databases and rank tracking matter heavily, Ahrefs or Semrush may be worth substantially more than a specialist AI tool.
- Action layer. Does the product stop at reporting, or can it help with briefs, content, technical fixes or automated workflows?
Do you need both?
Some teams will. A reasonable stack might use Ahrefs or Semrush for traditional SEO and large-scale market research, and a specialist for a focused workflow the suite does not cover deeply enough.
For example, keep Ahrefs for backlinks and competitive search research while using PB for JavaScript crawler delivery and a smaller set of AI visibility prompts. The second tool should add a distinct capability. If both products produce essentially the same dashboard, consolidation makes sense.
When Semrush or Ahrefs is probably enough
Stay with the larger suite when the team already uses it daily, its included AI prompt or check allowance matches your needs, the websites are technically straightforward, you do not need a separate crawler/rendering workflow, reporting consolidation matters, and AI visibility is one metric among many.
When a specialist tool is worth adding
Consider a specialist when you want more AI engines for less money, more focused citation analysis, several sites, technical crawler access, agent-specific workflows, a simpler product for non-SEO users, or a concrete problem the suite does not solve.
There is no reason to buy a category twice
SEO suites are adding AI tracking. AI visibility startups are adding site audits, content tools, crawler logs and analytics. Feature-list comparisons are getting noisier.
A better question: which product removes a problem your current stack still has?
If Semrush already gives you the visibility data you need, use it. If Ahrefs Brand Radar gives you the market-scale research you need, use it. If a specialist gives you a narrower workflow at lower cost, use that. And if the actual problem is incomplete JavaScript HTML, fix that technical problem before buying another dashboard. See JavaScript SEO.
Frequently asked questions
Is Semrush good for AI visibility tracking?
Yes. Semrush's AI Visibility Toolkit currently tracks 25 custom prompts daily and covers ChatGPT, Google AI experiences, Gemini and Perplexity, alongside competitor and site-readiness analysis. It is strongest when that data should live next to the rest of Semrush.
Does Ahrefs track ChatGPT visibility?
Yes. Ahrefs supports custom AI prompt tracking and Brand Radar for broader visibility research across major AI platforms. Custom prompts are priced in checks; Brand Radar indexes are a separate purchase.
Is a specialist AI visibility tool cheaper than Semrush or Ahrefs?
Sometimes. OtterlyAI starts at $29/month and Prerender Buddy at $39/month, while Peec and Promptwatch start at $95/month. Price alone is not a fair comparison because Semrush and Ahrefs include much broader SEO datasets and workflows.
Can I use Ahrefs or Semrush together with Prerender Buddy?
Yes. A team could use a major SEO suite for traditional search research and PB for crawler rendering, page evidence and focused AI visibility monitoring.
Which is better for a JavaScript-heavy website?
If the main issue is whether crawlers receive complete rendered HTML, a tool focused on crawler response evidence and rendering is more directly relevant. Semrush and Ahrefs remain stronger general SEO suites.
