Getting mentioned in ChatGPT and getting cited by ChatGPT are not the same thing.

A brand can appear in an answer without a link to its website. A website can be cited even when the brand is not explicitly recommended. A competitor can be recommended while a third-party review site provides the supporting citation.

That makes citation tracking more useful than a one-off "does ChatGPT know my brand?" check. The definitions of mention, citation and recommendation are covered in AI mentions vs citations vs recommendations. This article is about what a tracker should preserve, and which current tools actually do that work.

A useful workflow should help answer:

  • Which prompts produce citations?
  • Which domains and pages does ChatGPT cite?
  • Is your own website cited, or only talked about?
  • Are competitors mentioned or recommended?
  • Which third-party sources keep showing up?
  • Does the pattern persist across comparable runs?
  • Can ChatGPT-related crawlers access the pages you want used as sources?

We build Prerender Buddy. Pricing and product details were checked on September 11, 2026 and can change. PB records controlled provider API observations, which can differ from a session in the ChatGPT consumer app. See why a dashboard and a manual ChatGPT check can disagree.

What is a ChatGPT citation?

When a recorded ChatGPT answer includes an explicit source link, that link is a citation. It shows part of the evidence used in that answer. It is not the same as a mention, and it is not the same as a recommendation.

For example:

"Acme is one option for small teams."

If Acme appears in the text, that is a mention. If ChatGPT presents Acme as a solution, that may also be a recommendation. If the answer links to acme.com/pricing or to a third-party article discussing Acme, that is a citation.

Tools also differ in how they store sources. In Prerender Buddy, an explicit citation is different from a returned or searched source. A URL shown beside an answer is not automatically a cited URL. Keep those relationships separate or the dashboard will mix unlike evidence.

Why citation tracking matters

Citation data helps show where the recorded answer is coming from.

Your website is cited

This is evidence that one of your pages was used as an explicit source in that collected answer. Inspect which page appears, which question triggered it, and whether the same page keeps appearing across comparable runs.

A competitor is mentioned, but another site is cited

If ChatGPT recommends a competitor and cites a review site, the next job may not be copying the competitor's product page. It may be understanding why that third-party source became influential. See how to audit the sources ChatGPT cites.

Third-party sources dominate the answer

Reddit, review sites, publishers, documentation and comparison pages can all shape answers. Different platforms also prefer different source mixes. The useful question is not only "how do I get ChatGPT to cite my homepage?" It is: which evidence environment is producing the answers we recorded?

1. Prerender Buddy — citation tracking plus crawler evidence

Prerender Buddy Starter currently costs $39/month. It includes three websites, 15 tracked prompts weekly across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude, five competitors per site, 10 monitored pages per site, 25,000 fresh renders and 10 article drafts per month.

Growth costs $89/month and expands to five websites, 40 prompts weekly across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Gemini, 10 competitors per site, 50 monitored pages per site, 50,000 fresh renders and 30 article drafts.

Within AI Visibility, PB can separate mentioned, recommended and missed outcomes, then inspect explicit citations, cited pages and domains, and the recorded answer behind a result. That makes it possible to move from "we are missing from this prompt" to "these pages were cited, this competitor was recommended, and this is the source environment to inspect."

Citation monitoring sits next to technical evidence: recognized crawler visits, requested URLs, HTTP status, cache hits and fresh renders, failed requests, raw-versus-rendered HTML, and website health findings. Use the Bot View Checker and Evidence when you need to inspect what a crawler-style request actually received.

Citation tracking cannot prove that fixing rendering will produce a citation. It can keep the technical question and the visibility question in the same workflow. For the distinction, see crawler access vs AI visibility.

Best for: small teams that want citations, competitors and recorded answers alongside website health and crawler-readability evidence, and can work with weekly standard prompt tracking.

2. OtterlyAI — inexpensive dedicated monitoring

OtterlyAI Lite currently starts at $29/month. It tracks 15 prompts daily across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot. Google AI Mode and Gemini currently cost an additional $9/month each on Lite; Claude currently costs an additional $29/month. Otterly pricing

Otterly includes citation and link tracking as part of its AI visibility workflow.

Best for: solo operators and smaller marketing teams that mainly want affordable daily AI search monitoring.

Tradeoff: the entry plan has a small prompt allowance, and extra engines increase the monthly cost. See PB vs Otterly.

3. Peec AI — citation intelligence and source opportunities

Peec AI brand Starter currently costs $95/month for 50 prompts, three selected models, daily tracking, one project and unlimited users. Peec pricing

Peec's ChatGPT visibility product focuses on the sources shaping AI answers, including owned versus earned opportunities. It also provides Agent Analytics for AI crawler visits through log and CDN integrations. That is a different crawler dataset from PB's recognized request evidence on a connected site.

Best for: marketing and SEO teams that want daily citation analytics and a dedicated GEO platform.

Tradeoff: it costs more than entry-level tools, especially if the current monitoring set is small. See Peec AI alternatives.

4. Promptwatch — citations plus an action layer

Promptwatch Essential currently starts at $95/month for 50 prompts, daily tracking across four models, Agent Credits, API access and MCP access. Promptwatch pricing

Promptwatch emphasizes mentions versus citations and publishes public datasets about which domains and content types AI platforms cite. Its workflow also connects monitoring with agents and optimization tasks.

Best for: teams that want citation tracking together with agents, API/MCP access and larger daily allowances.

See Promptwatch alternatives.

5. Profound — citation research and a larger AEO stack

Profound Starter currently costs $99/month when billed yearly and tracks 50 ChatGPT prompts daily. Growth currently costs $399/month and expands engine coverage. Profound pricing

Profound publishes citation-source research across answer engines. Treat those studies as vendor research, then verify the current plan's engine coverage before buying. The advertised Starter plan is ChatGPT-only.

Best for: teams that expect citation analysis to become a substantial research function.

Tradeoff: broader answer-engine coverage requires a more expensive tier. See Profound alternatives.

What should you actually measure?

A citation total is not enough. Track at least five things, each with a stated denominator.

1. Citation coverage

How many recorded answers contain an explicit web citation? An answer without an explicit citation should not be treated the same as a cited answer.

2. Owned citation share

How often does your own domain appear among explicit citations? Useful, but not the only goal. A third-party source that recommends your product can still be commercially valuable.

3. Competitor citation share

Which competitor websites are repeatedly cited? Look for recurring domains and pages rather than reacting to a single answer.

4. Third-party source concentration

Which publishers, communities, review sites and directories repeatedly support answers in your category? Those may become distribution or digital-PR opportunities. See third-party websites worth pitching.

5. Citation-to-recommendation relationship

Is your site cited while someone else is recommended? Is your brand recommended based on a third-party citation? Those cases require different actions. See your brand appears, but your website isn't cited.

Do citations cause recommendations?

Not necessarily. Citation data is observational evidence.

If your website is cited in a recorded ChatGPT answer, you know that collected answer used the page as an explicit source. You do not know that obtaining the citation caused the model to recommend the brand. Changing a page and later seeing a new citation also does not prove causation.

Treat tracked answers as evidence to investigate, not a ranking algorithm.

ChatGPT citations can change

AI answers are not static search results. They can change because of model updates, retrieval changes, query interpretation, location, language, available web results, source freshness and changes to the underlying websites.

That is why repeated comparable monitoring is more useful than asking ChatGPT once and saving a screenshot. The goal is persistent patterns. A practical ChatGPT workflow is in how to see whether ChatGPT mentions your brand.

Check the cited page, not only the domain

Domain reports show broad patterns. Page-level citations are where action becomes possible.

competitor.com/features suggests an owned-content comparison. g2.com/best-tools-for-x points toward review distribution. A Reddit thread is a community signal. Preserve the URL and the answer context.

What if your website is never cited?

Do not jump immediately to producing more content. Check the basics first:

  1. Is the page publicly accessible?
  2. Does the initial HTML contain the important content?
  3. Is robots.txt blocking relevant crawlers? Check crawler support and the robots.txt / llms.txt analyzer.
  4. Does the page return the expected status?
  5. Are title and H1 present in the crawler response?
  6. Is the content actually useful for the tracked questions?
  7. Are other authoritative sources discussing the brand at all?

A citation problem can be content, authority, distribution or technical access. Often it is a combination. See AI visibility and crawler monitoring.

Which ChatGPT citation tracker should you choose?

Choose OtterlyAI if low-cost daily monitoring is the priority.

Choose Prerender Buddy if you want citations and recorded answers connected to crawler accessibility, website monitoring and managed rendering, and weekly collection is enough.

Choose Peec AI if you want dedicated daily citation intelligence and source analytics.

Choose Promptwatch if you want citation monitoring combined with agents, APIs and optimization workflows.

Choose Profound if you need a larger AEO research stack and ChatGPT is the main engine at entry level.

The important part is not collecting the most citation data. It is turning a citation pattern into the next useful decision.

Frequently asked questions

Can you see which websites ChatGPT cites?

Yes, when a recorded ChatGPT answer contains explicit web citations, AI visibility tools can capture and organize those linked sources. Returned or searched sources are not the same evidence.

Is a ChatGPT mention the same as a citation?

No. A mention means the brand appears in the answer. A citation is an explicit linked source. A recommendation is a separate outcome.

How often should I track ChatGPT citations?

Daily tracking provides more observations. Weekly tracking may be sufficient for smaller teams that change the website less often. Choose a cadence that changes decisions. PB's standard paid prompt tracking is weekly.

Can citation tracking tell me why ChatGPT recommends a competitor?

It provides evidence, not a complete causal explanation. Repeated citations and competitor presence can suggest which sources shape the recorded answers. They should not be treated as a ranking formula.

Can prerendering guarantee ChatGPT citations?

No. Prerendering can help when a crawler receives thin or incomplete JavaScript HTML. It does not guarantee citations, recommendations, rankings or traffic.
